These techniques all make hair lighter, each in a different way. The difference is how much of the hair the lightener reaches, and how soft the transition is between roots and ends.

Single-tone colouring
2 hOne colour from roots to ends. The colour is applied along the whole length, whether you are colouring for the first time or refreshing an existing tone. No transitions: the whole length stays in one shade.

Root colouring
2 hColours only the regrowth at the roots, leaving the rest of the length untouched. Chosen when the overall tone still works and only the line between regrowth and previously coloured hair needs evening out.

Express toning
1 hA toning pigment without bleach. It does not lighten — it evens the tone along the length and removes unwanted undertones. Often done as the final step after lightening, once the lightness is there and the tone needs refining.

Highlights
3–4 hIndividual strands are separated and lightened in foil. The classic technique, where you can choose precisely how many strands are lightened and how light they become. The price range is wide because the amount of work depends on hair length and thickness.

Balayage
5 hColour is painted on freehand with a brush, without foil, mainly on the length and ends. The transition comes out soft and irregular, closer to the way hair lightens in the sun. The roots stay darker, so regrowth is not a sharp line.

Ombré
5 hA transition from darker roots to lighter ends, built horizontally. Unlike balayage the transition is more pronounced and more even across the width of the hair — less diffused, more like a clear border between two tones.

Air Touch
5 hStrands are separated with a stream of air from a dryer: the shorter and finer hairs are blown away and only the remaining, longer ones are lightened. That is why the transition comes out the finest of the techniques listed here.
